CLABSI

Central Line Associated Blood Stream Infections (CLABSI) are infections in the bloodstream developed within 48 hours of the placement of a central line and not related to another infection site.

Australia:

  • Approximately 4000 episodes in Australian intensive care units each year. Mortality rate of 4–20% with estimated cost of $36.26 million

Europe:

  • It is estimated that treatment for CLABSI can range from 7 days to 6 weeks and cost an average of roughly $46,000 per case.4
  • Despite treatment for CLABSI, it is estimated that 25% of people who contract a CLABSI will die.5
