NEJM published study on game changing program for saving mothers and newborns.
The New England Journal of Medicine, has just published a study showing a 40% reduction in early newborn death[1] and a 75% reduction in maternal death after implementation of the Safer Births Bundle of Care program, in Tanzania.
Safer Births Bundle of Care is a program built on over a decade of global research and collaboration, and at Laerdal we are proud to play a part in it. The program supports birth attendants to better manage the most common causes of maternal and newborn mortality, and builds on the foundation of the well-known Helping Babies Breathe program.
The Safer Births Bundle of Care includes:
- High-frequency simulation-based individual and team training
- Specially designed innovative training and clinical tools
- Continuous quality improvement
- Strong mentorship and engagement with local government, for sustainability over time

We leave you with the quote from Hege Ersdal, Professor in Global Health and Simulation and co-author of the study:
“With the Safer Births Bundle of Care, we have proven that it is possible to implement combined training and quality improvement efforts that lead to dramatic and sustained reductions in newborn and maternal deaths. I believe this marks a game-changing moment for women and newborns, everywhere.”
